Successful Entrepreneurs

Andrew Gotianun is a Chinese Filipino entrepreneur from the Philippines who at one time held a net worth of US$860 million (2007). He runs the Filinvest Development Corporation which owns most of the Filinvest Land and the East West Bank.Gotianun also focuses on biofuels and has acquired two sugar mills and a plantation. As of 2008, his fortune has decreased sharply to $235 Million, a result of the global financial downturn. Gotianun made a living from salvaging ships at the end of the Second World War. Several years later, he became involved in an automobile dealership. Later still, in 1955, he founded Filinvest Development Corporation a company which became engaged in real estate in 1967. Gotaniun and his wife, Mercedes, temporarily retired from business activities in the 1980s but returned a short time later, with a plan to make improvements to the corporation. He is among those honored at the BizNewAsia Real Estate Who is Who (BREW) awards.

Henry Sy, Sr. (born October 25, 1924) is a Chinese Filipino businessman and the founder of SM Group and chairman of SM Prime Holdings, the largest retailer and shopping mall operator in the Philippines. He earned his Associate of Arts degree in Commercial Studies at Far Eastern University in 1950. Acknowledged as the country’s "Retail King," he has come a long way from the modest shoe store he set up in Quiapo in 1946, to become Asia's biggest shopping mall operator with over 30 malls throughout the Philippines


Tony Tan Caktiong is the founder and current Chairman and CEO of Philippine fast food chain Jollibee. He graduated from the University of Santo Tomas with a degree in chemical engineering and graduated high school from Chiang Kai Shek College. Caktiong had initially planned an ice cream parlor when he founded Jollibee, then subsequently added additional dishes such as hamburgers, french fries, and fried chicken.
Caktiong, on July 8, 2008 was elected board director of Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT)'s 11-member board replacing Ma. Lourdes Rausa-Chan. He is also an independent director of First Gen Corp. Also, Caktiong top billed the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) video documentaries. The WIPO webcast page featured personalities chosen from the 184 member states.



Lucio Tan is one of the most prominent business magnates in the Philippines and the second richest man in the Philippines. He owns Asia Brewery, the second largest brewery in the Philippines, Tanduay Holdings, one of the world's largest rum makers, Fortune Tobacco, the largest tobacco company in the country, Philippine Airlines the Philippines' flag carrier, (these companies are just some of the 300 companies that Tan controls). According to some estimates, the total value of his business empire would not be less than $2.3 billion, and he controls 40 to 60% of that. Tan was born on July 17, 1934, in Amoy, Fujian, Republic of China. His parents moved to the Philippines when he was a child. He studied chemical engineering at Far Eastern University in Manila and later obtained his Bachelor of Science degree in the said program from the University of Santo Tomas. He actually quit before graduating to take a job in a tobacco factory. Though a non-smoker, he started a cigarette company called Fortune Tobacco in 1966. This humble venture, which was housed in a small hut in Marikina, proved to be the enterprise that would catapult Mr. Tan to success. From this flagship company emerged numerous successful ventures in agribusiness; airlines and related services; banking, finance and securities; brewery; chemicals; distillery and alcohol; education; food; hotel; manufacturing; property development; steel fabrication and construction; and tourism and travel services.





John L. Gokongwei, Jr. (born August 11, 1926 in Gulangyu, Xiamen, Fujian Province, China) is a Chinese Filipino Businessman with holdings in telecom, financial services, petrochemicals, power, aviation and hog farming. In 2008, Gokongwei has a networth of $680 million. His father, John Gokongwei Sr. the founder of Universal Robina Corporation. He is the chairman of JG Summit Holdings, one of largest conglomerates in the Philippines. In 2005, his company had spent $700 million of internally generated funds for buying new aircraft for his airline, Cebu Pacific Air, the largest carrier in the Philippines. From 2003 up to the present his telecom arm Digitel Telecommunications Philippines spent nearly $800 million for its mobile unit Sun Cellular which is the 3rd largest mobile operator in the Philippines as of 2008. He is currently negotiating a $1 billion takeover of UIC a property giant from Singapore of which he owns in excess of 30%. UIC controls Singapore Land one of the biggest property landlord in Singapore. Gokongwei also owns Universal Robina Corporation, largest manufacturer of snacks in the Philippines and the maker of the very successful C2 green tea drink in the country. He also controls Robinsons Land one of the biggest property concerns in the Philippines that operates the Robinsons Mall.





Manuel "Manny" Bamba Villar Jr. (born December 13, 1949) is a Filipino businessman and politician. He is currently a Philippine Senator, president of the Nacionalista Party, and a candidate for president in the 2010 Presidential Election. Villar was born to a poor family in Tondo,an impoverished and densely populated district of Manila. After graduating from the University of the Philippines, he worked as an accountant and financial analyst, then launched a highly successful business in real estate. The number of homes built by Villar's companies has totaled to over 200,000 units, and his business career made him one of the country's wealthiest persons.






Andrew L. Tan is an entrepreneur from the Philippines who engages in real estate, liquor and fast food. According to a 2007 edition of the Forbes Magazine, Tan became the Philippines' fourth billionaire after Jaime Zobel de Ayala, Henry Sy, and Lucio Tan(no relation). His fortune that year was $1.1 Billion. It declined to $700 Million due to stock problems. Originally a poor immigrant from China, Tan was born in the Fujian province. He spent his childhood at an apartment in Hongkong which was shared by other families and had short supply. Later, he moved to Manila where he studied accounting at University of the East. For economic reasons, he would head to school walking rather than riding on public transportation. He then graduated. During his early years in business, the government of Quezon City honored him "Businessman of the Year" for 2004.




George S.K. Ty is a Chinese Filipino finance tycoon. He founded Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company, currently the largest bank in terms of Assets and Capital in the Philippines. He also has stakes in the Bank of the Philippine Islands and Philippine Savings Bank, a Metrobank subsidiary. George Ty was the owner of the G.T. International Tower in Makati. He used to be a billionaire where he once had a networth of $2.2 Billion back in 1998.






Lex Ledesma is a Filipino entrepreneur, former competitive debater, and educator. He is currently working with the ILO on a program to promote entrepreneurship in Philippine schools. He is also one of the founders of The One School, a new institution of tertiary education in Manila's Central Business District of Makati whose curriculum has a prominent focus on imparting entrepreneurial skills.

1. Do what you enjoy.
What you get out of your business in the form of personal satisfaction, financial gain, stability and enjoyment will be the sum of what you put into your business. So if you don't enjoy what you're doing, in all likelihood it's safe to assume that will be reflected in the success of your business--or subsequent lack of success. In fact, if you don't enjoy what you're doing, chances are you won't succeed.

2. Take what you do seriously.

You cannot expect to be effective and successful in business unless you truly believe in your business and in the goods and services that you sell. Far too many home business owners fail to take their own businesses seriously enough, getting easily sidetracked and not staying motivated and keeping their noses to the grindstone. They also fall prey to naysayers who don't take them seriously because they don't work from an office building, office park, storefront, or factory. Little do these skeptics, who rain on the home business owner's parade, know is that the number of people working from home, and making very good annual incomes, has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years.

3. Plan everything.
Planning every aspect of your home business is not only a must, but also builds habits that every home business owner should develop, implement, and maintain. The act of business planning is so important because it requires you to analyze each business situation, research and compile data, and make conclusions based mainly on the facts as revealed through the research. Business planning also serves a second function, which is having your goals and how you will achieve them, on paper. You can use the plan that you create both as map to take you from point A to Z and as a yardstick to measure the success of each individual plan or segment within the plan.

4. Manage money wisely.
The lifeblood of any business enterprise is cash flow. You need it to buy inventory, pay for services, promote and market your business, repair and replace tools and equipment, and pay yourself so that you can continue to work. 5. Ask for the sale.
A home business entrepreneur must always remember that marketing, advertising, or promotional activities are completely worthless, regardless of how clever, expensive, or perfectly targeted they are, unless one simple thing is accomplished--ask for the sale. This is not to say that being a great salesperson, advertising copywriting whiz or a public relations specialist isn't a tremendous asset to your business. However, all of these skills will be for naught if you do not actively ask people to buy what you are selling.

6. Remember it's all about the customer.
Your home business is not about the products or services that you sell. Your home business is not about the prices that you charge for your goods and services. Your home business is not about your competition and how to beat them. Your business is all about your customers, or clients, period. After all, your customers are the people that will ultimately decide if your business goes boom or bust. 8. Project a positive business image.

9. Get to know your customers.

One of the most amazing aspects of the internet is that a one or two person business operating from a basement can have a superior website to a $50 million company, and nobody knows the difference. Make sure you're keeping up with the high-tech world as it suits your needs.. The best technology is that which helps you, not that which impresses your neighbors.

11. Build a top-notch business team.
No one person can build a successful business alone. It's a task that requires a team that is as committed as you to the business and its success. Your business team may include family members, friends, suppliers, business alliances, employees, sub-contractors, industry and business associations, local government and the community. Of course the most important team members will be your customers or clients. Any or all may have a say in how your business will function and a stake in your business future.
12. Become known as an expert.
When you have a problem that needs to be solved, do you seek just anyone's advice or do you seek an expert in the field to help solve your particular problem? Obviously, you want the most accurate information and assistance that you can get. You naturally seek an expert to help solve your problem. You call a plumber when the hot water tank leaks, a real estate agent when it's time to sell your home or a dentist when you have a toothache. Therefore, it only stands to reason that the more you become known for your expertise in your business, the more people will seek you out to tap into your expertise, creating more selling and referral opportunities. In effect, becoming known as an expert is another style of prospecting for new business, just in reverse. Instead of finding new and qualified people to sell to, these people seek you out for your expertise.
13. Create a competitive advantage.
A home business must have a clearly defined unique selling proposition. This is nothing more than a fancy way of asking the vital question, "Why will people choose to do business with you or purchase your product or service instead of doing business with a competitor and buying his product or service?" In other words, what one aspect or combination of aspects is going to separate your business from your competition? Will it be better service, a longer warranty, better selection, longer business hours, more flexible payment options, lowest price, personalized service, better customer service, better return and exchange policies or a combination of several of these?

14. Invest in yourself.
Top entrepreneurs buy and read business and marketing books, magazines, reports, journals, newsletters, websites and industry publications, knowing that these resources will improve their understanding of business and marketing functions and skills. They join business associations and clubs, and they network with other skilled business people to learn their secrets of success and help define their own goals and objectives. Top entrepreneurs attend business and marketing seminars, workshops and training courses, even if they have already mastered the subject matter of the event. They do this because they know that education is an ongoing process. There are usually ways to do things better, in less time, with less effort. 15. Be accessible.
We're living in a time when we all expect our fast food lunch at the drive-thru window to be ready in mere minutes, our dry cleaning to be ready for pick-up on the same day, our money to be available at the cash machine and our pizza delivered in 30 minutes or it's free. You see the pattern developing--you must make it as easy as you can for people to do business with you, regardless of the home business you operate.

You must remain cognizant of the fact that few people will work hard, go out of their way, or be inconvenienced just for the privilege of giving you their hard-earned money. The shoe is always on the other foot. Making it easy for people to do business with you means that you must be accessible and knowledgeable about your products and services. You must be able to provide customers with what they want, when they want it.

16. Build a rock-solid reputation.
A good reputation is unquestionably one of the home business owner's most tangible and marketable assets. You can't simply buy a good reputation; it's something that you earn by honoring your promises. If you promise to have the merchandise in the customer's hands by Wednesday, you have no excuse not to have it there. If you offer to repair something, you need to make good on your offer. Consistency in what you offer is the other key factor. If you cannot come through with the same level of service (and products) for clients on a regular basis, they have no reason to trust you . . . and without trust, you won't have a good reputation.
17. Sell benefits. Pushing product features is for inexperienced or wannabe entrepreneurs. Your advertising, sales presentations, printed marketing materials, product packaging, website, newsletters, trade show exhibit and signage are vital. 18. Get involved.
Always go out of your way to get involved in the community that supports your business. 22. Get and stay organized.
The key to staying organized is not about which type of file you have or whether you keep a stack or two of papers on your desk, but it's about managing your business. It's about having systems in place to do things. Therefore, you wan to establish a routine by which you can accomplish as much as possible in a given workday, whether that's three hours for a part-time business or seven or nine hours as a full-timer. In fact, you should develop systems and routines for just about every single business activity. Small things such as creating a to-do list at the end of each business day, or for the week, will help keep you on top of important tasks to tackle. Creating a single calendar to work from, not multiple sets for individual tasks or jobs, will also ensure that jobs are completed on schedule and appointments kept. Incorporating family and personal activities into your work calendar is also critical so that you work and plan from a single calendar.

23. Take time off.
The temptation to work around the clock is very real for some home business owners. After all, you don't have a manager telling you it's time to go home because they can't afford the overtime pay. Every person working from home must take time to establish a regular work schedule that includes time to stretch your legs and take lunch breaks, plus some days off and scheduled vacations. Create the schedule as soon as you have made the commitment to start a home business. Of course, your schedule will have to be flexible. You should, therefore, not fill every possible hour in the day. Give yourself a backup hour or two. All work and no play makes you burn out very fast and grumpy customer service is not what people want.

24. Limit the number of hats you wear.
It's difficult for most business owners not to take a hands-on approach. They try to do as much as possible and tackle as many tasks as possible in their business. The ability to multitask, in fact, is a common trait shared by successful entrepreneurs. However, once in a while you have to stand back and look beyond today to determine what's in the best interest of your business and yourself over the long run. Most highly successful entrepreneurs will tell you that from the time they started out, they knew what they were good at and what tasks to delegate to others.

25. Follow-up constantly.
Constant contact, follow-up, and follow-through with customers, prospects, and business alliances should be the mantra of every home business owner, new or established. Constant and consistent follow-up enables you to turn prospects into customers, increase the value of each sale and buying frequency from existing customers, and build stronger business relationships with suppliers and your core business team. Follow-up is especially important with your existing customer base, as the real work begins after the sale. It's easy to sell one product or service, but it takes work to retain customers and keep them coming back.

Business Plan

What is a business plan?

A business plan is any plan that works for a business to look ahead, allocate resources, focus on key points, and prepare for problems and opportunities.

Unfortunately, many people think of business plans only for starting a new business or applying for business loans. But they are also vital for running a business, whether or not the business needs new loans or new investments. Businesses need plans to optimize growth and development according to priorities.

What’s a startup plan?
A simple startup plan includes a summary, mission statement, keys to success, market analysis, and break-even analysis. This kind of plan is good for deciding whether or not to proceed with a plan, to tell if there is a business worth pursuing, but it is not enough to run a business with.

Is there a standard business plan?
A normal business plan (one that follows the advice of business experts) includes a standard set of elements, as shown below. Plan formats and outlines vary, but generally a plan will include components such as descriptions of the company, product or service, market, forecasts, management team, and financial analysis.

Your plan will depend on your specific situation. For example, description of the management team is very important for investors while financial history is most important for banks. However, if you’re developing a plan for internal use only, you may not need to include all the background details that you already know. Make your plan match its purpose.

What is most important in a plan?
It depends on the case, but usually it’s the cash flow analysis and specific implementation details.

  • Cash flow is both vital to a company and hard to follow. Cash is usually misunderstood as profits, and they are different. Profits don’t guarantee cash in the bank. Lots of profitable companies go under because of cash flow problems. It just isn’t intuitive.
  • Implementation details are what make things happen. Your brilliant strategies and beautifully formatted planning documents are just theory unless you assign responsibilities, with dates and budgets, follow up with those responsible, and track results. Business plans are really about getting results and improving your company.

Can you suggest a standard outline?
If you have the main components, the order doesn’t matter that much:

  1. Executive Summary: Write this last. It’s just a page or two of highlights.
  2. Company Description: Legal establishment, history, start-up plans, etc.
  3. Product or Service: Describe what you’re selling. Focus on customer benefits.
  4. Market Analysis: You need to know your market, customer needs, where they are, how to reach them, etc.
  5. Strategy and Implementation: Be specific. Include management responsibilities with dates and budget.
  6. Management Team: Include backgrounds of key members of the team, personnel strategy, and details.
  7. Financial Plan: Include profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet, break-even analysis, assumptions, business ratios, etc.

Types Of Entrepreneurs


Broker - A "broker" is a go-between someone who helps others find the products or services they need. They may charge a percentage of the sales price of the item brokered, a flat fee, or an hourly fee. Real estate agents are perhaps the best-known type of broker, but you could be a broker for almost any kind of product or service (except those with very narrow profit margins). You could, for instance, be an auto, mortgage, business, even wine broker. If you've got a strong area of expertise or interest -- and enjoy shopping -- being a broker is a low-cost way to go into business.

Builder - One of the largest segments of entrepreneurs are self-employed contractors -- carpenters, electricians, plumbers, painters, etc. Whether you're building a whole housing development, or laying the floor in one apartment, if you enjoy seeing something be created from nothing and you have the necessary skills, being a builder may be for you.

Caretaker - Our society has a great need to have people and things taken care of, maintained, and assisted. That opens up lots of opportunities for those entrepreneurs who are patient and nurturing. If you're a person who can be consistent over time and see yourself as a helping personality, you may be the caretaking entrepreneurial type.

Creator - You may be a person with a vision -- whether it's in fashion, graphics, technology, or in any area of product or service. Creators include graphic or fashion designers, inventors, business builders, etc. Creators often need to team up with other entrepreneurs who are strong in sales or operations to help make their vision a financially viable reality.

Owner - If you've got money to invest, you might be able to put your capital to work for you. Whether you invest in stocks, real estate, vending machines, businesses, etc., being an active "owner" enables you to leverage your money into additional income without having to show up to work every day.

Seller - If you're good at sales, you should never have to go hungry. Great salespeople are always in demand. Many of them are self-employed, typically working on commission. If you're good at selling, and willing to work hard, you can earn a lot of money from sales.

What Is Management?

Management - is a process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling a company’s financial physical, human and informational resources in order to achieve its goal.

Planning- is the setting up of goals or target results including the work schedules, quality specifications, operating procedures , rules, and cost budgeting.

Organizing- the determination of relationship among individual in a group in the performance of a task including the function of staffing, where it determines exactly how many workers are needed to meet the target. It also involves the lining up of tools and equipment in its proper place as to avoid unnecessary waste of time, effort, and materials while pursuing production process.

Leading- this management function concerned with the effort to guide workers in putting plans into actions by issuing orders instructions. In order to achieve harmonious working condition at the workplace, three important principles; leadership style, proper motivation, and good human relation should be a guide in directing. Directing usually done through delegation of work by conferring of authority and responsibility to others and the creation of accountability of performance.

Controlling- the process in which it measures the result of work whether it meets the expected outcome, which is a matter of evaluating the performance of an individual and the group as whole comparing it with the set policy standard. It is a balancing activity between people and other resources of the firm especially the policy. It is also a matter of how to regulate group activities as well as the conduct and behavior of every individual in the organization. It is an effort to check whether the activities are keeping well according to plans and standards set by the policy programs and the giving of corrective actions.
